Each driver's fastest lap is cut into short sections of about 120 metres, lined up on the official sector timing lines. The driver who covers a section in the least time owns it. Sections where the best two are within 2 milliseconds are shown as level.
Race laps are available from 2018. Qualifying and sprint qualifying laps, and the season view, start in 2025. Where a timestamped export exists (2025 onwards) the gaps are exact; for earlier races the time between samples is estimated from speed, so small gaps are approximate.
The map uses each driver's fastest lap of the session, not their whole race. A fastest lap can come on fresh tyres late in the race, so it shows pace rather than race result.
For each qualifying session, every driver's fastest lap is compared with the field median. Sections are grouped as slow, medium or fast by how quickly the field covers them, and each team's time gained is averaged over its drivers. The relative option takes out overall pace to show where a car is strong for its level.
